At the start of a glistening new year, so full of opportunities and new beginnings, it can be a significant time for deep reflection on encouraging and nurturing your own inner light.
When we take this time to journey within to that quiet space, we can find within our own inner light which when nurtured, manifests courage, wonder, happiness, joy and openness.
Once we connect to this light, we can then cultivate it, take it out and share it for all the world around to see. We give ourselves permission to shine.
This often ignored area of your life can have a dramatic impact on your health and well-being. The good news is that, when it’s acknowledged, the positive health impacts can be exponential.
Do you find yourself just moving through the day-to-day motions lacking purpose and meaning? Perhaps this lacking of purpose and meaning in your life is making you sick, fatigued, unhappy, lazy, sad, depressed, lethargic, stressed, anxious etc.
When we don’t know who we are, it’s very hard to know what our purpose is in life. I believe our sense of purpose brings out the very best in us. Our purpose can be the meaning of your life. I am confident from my own experiences (and those relayed to me time and time again by my students), that when we access our inner light and then share that light outwards we feel a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives.
So what’s all this about? How do I access and share my inner light? We’re coming to that shortly.
Firstly, I want you to know that we are all born to shine. Not just some of us, but every single one of us in our own unique way.
As Marianne Williamson so wisely said…
Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.
And, as we let our own light shine,
we consciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
So how do I practice accessing my inner light?
You can access your inner light quite simply by getting quiet and still and meditating. Here is a simple mediation practice you can do daily to help.
Find a quiet space where you know you won’t be disturbed.
- Sit comfortably with a nice tall spine, eyes closed and your hands resting in your lap, palms are open.
- Begin by taking several long, deep, full breaths (down into your belly).
- Visualize a beautiful light at your heart space and begin to visualize that light within your heart (keeping your focus and attention on this light).
- When the mind wanders, simply return it to this beautiful light at your heart.
- Silently repeat the mantra “my inner light shines” as you focus on the light at your heart space.
- Stay here in this space of your heart for a few mins, repeating the mantra silently and focusing on the light in and around you.
- When you are ready to move out of meditation, sit quietly taking a few moments breathing with ease before moving out into the rest of your day.
Another simple way to access your inner light is by looking in the mirror and smiling back at yourself. I mean really smiling – full-heartedly smiling (think of your biggest smile and multiply it). See your eyes light up in the mirror; this joy, bliss, love is your inner light beaming back at you. It may sound strange reading it here now but go and practice it and you’ll be amazed at the shift in your emotional state.
So how can you share your light?
How you go about sharing your light, can often be quite subtle or for others it’s much grander depending on the particular outward deed and display. Some share their light with others in the work that they do. Those who are truly passionate and love what they do, may share their light by deepening their sense of joy and compassion, which then radiates out to others and can’t help but affect them in many positive ways. It’s a self-feeding perpetual loop because the positivity rebounds back and forth between you and the world.
Other ways of sharing your light could be, by giving your time through volunteering, providing kind words (of praise, encouragement and acknowledgment) to brighten someone’s day, sharing your wisdom, sharing your talents via music, art, dance, or some fresh goodness from your own garden, giving away some material things (clothes, kitchen utensils, laptop, phone etc.) that you no longer need to someone else that needs it. Giving hugs, sharing your beautiful smile with others (especially a stranger), giving your positive energy (remember the more you give, the more energy you create) and opening your heart with understanding and compassion to those that need it most.
So I hope I’ve provided you with some ideas on how you can share that gorgeous light of yours for all to see.
Whatever way you choose to deepen the connection to your inner light, as you nurture and grow it, you will begin to understand that this source of inner light is always there supporting and guiding you to find a greater sense of harmony and effortlessness, even through those darkest of days.
It’s time to finally get out there and start shining your beautiful light, and as you do, you’ll inspire those around you to do the same.
