Let’s Chat About PCOS!

I haven’t shared much about my PCOS journey on my blog and I feel it’s time.

I’m seeing more and more clients coming to me with PCOS issues.

Sometimes it’s not their main concern but when they start to share what’s going for them in their life; their emotional challenges etc., I can see how PCOS is playing a huge role in this.

I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 19. At the time my monthly moon cycle had stopped for nearly 9 months, which is pretty frightening right? The doctor also told me that there would be a high possibility, that I may never be able to have kids. However, I see many women with PCOS conceiving healthy children.

At that time, I was young and naive. I was drinking and partying a lot during those day’s (like most 19 year olds). I kind of put it to the side when my period returned and thought nothing more about it.

Upon landing in Australia, I decided it was time to delve into learning and understanding more about my ovarian syndrome. I also wanted to understand what I could do naturally to cure it or at least manage it.

What is PCOS?

PCOS Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition where a woman’s sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) are out of balance. This can lead to the growth of ovarian cysts on the ovaries. These cysts or follicles may rarely grow to maturity or produce eggs capable of being fertilised.

The symptoms are:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles – menstruation may be less or more frequent due to less frequent ovulation (production of an egg)
  • Amenorrhoea (no periods) – some women with PCOS do not menstruate, in some cases for many years
  • Excessive hair growth and acne – possibly due to increased free testosterone
  • Scalp hair loss
  • Reduced fertility – (difficulty in becoming pregnant) related to less frequent or absent ovulation
  • Mood changes – including anxiety and depression
  • Overweight/Obesity

I struggled with most of the above symptoms for many years. I was riddled in anxiety and depression often trying to understand its roots.

Excessive hair grew on my chin, upper lip and the sides of my face, which really affected my confidence.

I’d break out in acne in the lead up to my cycle and again this really knocked my confidence.

I struggled with my weight for many years; I could never seem to lose those stubborn few kilos of extra weight.

Today, I’m happy to share with you that my PCOS is pretty much under control.

I no longer struggle with my weight, excessive facial hair (there’s still a little, but nothing like what it used to be), crazy moods (yes I have my up and down days, but again totally manageable and nothing like what I use to deal with) and my cycle is pretty regular (it’s only ever irregular when there’s a lot of stress in my life).

I’ll be honest my cycle went a little crazy earlier this year (due to much stress) and the minute I manage my stress it’s back to it’s normal self again.

So can you cure PCOS?

Western Medicine will tell you it’s not possible!

But, I personally believe from my own story and experience that it’s absolutely possible to heal your ovaries.

If you get to the root of your hormone balance, you can heal that.

For me, the root of my hormone imbalance was insulin resistance and I have healed this naturally.

If I can do it, so can you.

After I was re-diagnosed with PCOS in Australia when I was 26, I was told at the time I’d be on Metformin for life!

The only solution my endocrinologist offered me back then, was a life on drugs!

But personally all this does is sweep the symptoms under a rug.

I personally have witnessed two factors at play in my polycystic ovaries:

1) Insulin imbalance due to dietary factors – this was huge for me at the time. My diet was atrocious. I was treating it like a rubbish bin. Surviving off toast, rabbit salads and chocolate. Not to mention, all the binge drinking on alcohol at the weekends!
2) Feminine imbalance due to emotional factors – again this was huge for me. As I’ve shared down below, from a young age I learned to supress. I didn’t know how to feel my emotions. Instead I’d avoid and numb myself out. Emotional healing has played a massive role in my healing here.

Let me tell you now these are absolutely within the capabilities of your beautiful body to heal.

What’s the cause of PCOS?

They say that PCOS for some women can run in the family. This is not the case for me though. Coming from a family of having 3 sisters and my mum, I’m only the only one with PCOS. Also none of my mother’s sisters or father’s sisters appears to have it.

I always like to look at the metaphysical reason for everything that’s going on in the body.

If you know much about my story, from a very young age I was that young girl who grew up pursuing a masculine brand of strength. I was a very sensitive young girl and my body received lessons in tightening, resisting, pushing or suppressing my innate empathy (all masculine qualities as you can see).

My mental chatter got the better of me, and my soul was too scared to speak up, through or for me. All this supressing, hardening, pushing, and tightening played a huge role in mine!

Metaphysically the ovaries link the physical body to the sacral chakra (2nd energy centre in the body). This energy centre is related to the power of creation.
The ovaries perform two specific functions, reproduction or the creation of new life, and the secretion of female hormones that determine femininity.

Ovarian disorders are strong messages from your body, telling you that you’re not in contact with your creative ability. You subconsciously feel you are at a disadvantage as a woman and have little faith in your ability to create something on your own to the point of often telling yourself, “I can’t do it”.

This is your body telling you that you need to start believing in yourself.

Being a woman diminishes neither your ability nor your worth.

Underestimating and undervaluing yourself in this manner will manifest in menstrual disorders.

I’m going to be sharing more on this topic as it’s a super important one and I’m seeing more and more women with it.
