Why You Need A Digital Detox?

Yogi Bhajan who brought Kundalini Yoga to the west, said that these times we are now living in, would be very stressful on our nervous systems. He quotes that emptiness; insanity and pain shall be everybody’s affair.

You can easily say that each and everyday we’re bombarded with more and more information. Our world is becoming more and more digital!

Have you ever thought about how often you spend at a computer everyday? Not to mention all those other devices such as your phone, tv, artificial lights, speakers etc. They all play a huge impact on our nervous systems.

The truth of the matter is, our digital lives are leaving us burned out, depleted, stressed, anxious, depressed and unhealthy!

I had a scary incident happen for me over the weekend. I woke in the very early hours of Sunday morning with excruiciating pain in my belly. It was so bad; I was curled up in a ball on the floor crying with the pain (which is very unlike me).

I almost passed out with the pain! My poor husband didn’t know what was going on. Witnessing a very pale wife puking over the toilet, he took it upon himself to drive me to the emergency and I’m so happy he did! Anyway to cut a long story short, I put this incident down to technology overload and stress.

I’m a strong believer in that life always gives us the exact teacher we need at every moment. This includes every misfortune, every illness, every accident, every red-light, every traffic jam, every argument, every annoying person, every loss, every moment of joy, sadness, frustration, depression, every addiction, every breath. Every moment is the Guru (the teacher).

This has been a huge wakeup call for me!

Switching off is something I need to factor into my life quite often, with having an online business. But, obviously I’ve not been off as much as my body needs it too.

After what happened for me over the weekend, I’ve decided that I need (at least one day every week) where I switch off from all technology completely and the day I’ve chosen is Sunday. You can join me if you like, for Switch Off Sunday’s starting next week?

Causes of Digital Burnout

Blue light is one of the causes of our low quality of sleep. These blue lights are found on our tv’s, laptops and computers.

Disrupted circadian rhythms have been linked to several types of cancer (breast, prostate), diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Night shift workers are especially vulnerable.

So this is why you want to be switching yourself off from technology, at least 2 hours before bed.

By 2020 (a little over 4 years away) depression will be the second leading cause of disability throughout the world!

New diseases and illnesses are emerging, all of which create new challenges for our immune systems, and a higher level of toxins are appearing in our environments and food sources.

Depression and fatigue accompany the changing world (these two conditions now account for 25% of visits to doctors). It’s been estimated that by 2020 (a little over 4 years away) depression will be the second leading cause of disability throughout the world, trailing only ischemic heart disease.

What a very scary fact!

Yogi Bhajan said that as humans we would attempt to counteract our fatigue and sense of alienation by turning to electronic technology (social media and gaming sites etc).  But this only increases the demands on our nervous systems!

So to handle all this new information and new energy, we must grow our inner education.  We need stamina, strong nerves, the ability to clean our body of toxins, and wisdom to apply our intelligence.

Kundalini Yoga is a technology of developing this. The Self-Sensory System is a guidance system that will steer you through life and into the right channels. You will be the master of your own self, your psyche, and your body. Using your Self-Sensory System, your creativity explodes. You’ll have an abundance of energy and will be able to serve others.

As you move through your week ahead, I encourage you to think about how often you reach for your phone, to distract yourself from feeling what’s really there?

Is it the first thing you reach for in the morning? Is it the last thing you finish your day with?

Perhaps it’s time for a digital detox?
