What is the Heart chakra?

Absolutely everyone wants to love and be loved. That very human yearning creates an instant and deep connection with Anahata, the heart chakra.

We are now moving up the spine to the fourth chakra often called the ‘heart chakra’, which rests in the center of the chakra system, at the very core of our soul. It’s physically located in the sushumna nadi (is the body’s great river, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, passing through each of the seven chakras in its course) in the region of the heart  (upper chest, and upper back area of our body). This chakra is the balance point, mixing the lower three chakras (which are associated with relationships to the society around you, your loved ones and yourself) with the upper three chakras (that relate to enlightenment and to connection with the Divine).

We open to and connect with harmony and peace through this chakra. The health of our heart center reveals the quality and power of love in our life. In Sanskrit, the heart chakra is called Anahata, which means “unstruck” or “unhurt.” Anahata chakra symbolizes the consciousness of love, empathy, selflessness and devotion. This name suggests that deep beneath our personal stories of brokenness and the pain in our heart, totality, endless love, and a fountain of compassion live.

Both the heart energy center as well as the physical heart are vital and both need just as much nurturing and attention. This is where a regular Asana (yoga) practice comes in as well as breath work and a healthy diet – all three will support the functioning of your physical heart. They will improve your circulatory and respiratory systems which will make the physical work of your heart easier. Meditation boosts and enriches the health of the spiritual heart center which helps you to look at your thoughts, words and actions with unconditional love.

The Sanskrit name for the heart chakra, Anahata translates to unhurt, a beautiful reference to the place from which we can love without fear or pain, without attachment. When we balance our heart chakra, we simultaneously release past relationship wounds and attachments which may be hurting us in the present, and which could also compromise our future. The key to attaining the state of being ‘unhurt’ is to find love, forgiveness and compassion – for others, and also for ourselves.

When we begin to heal the heart chakra, we create a softening of the heart. Location of this Chakra in the Body

The heart chakra is located near the center of the breastbone or sternum; at the back its location is the first thoracic vertebra between and below the shoulder blades.

Thymus gland and it’s also in charge of the functioning of the heart organ, lungs, bronchia system, lymph glands, secondary circulatory system, immune system as well as the arm and hands.

Heart Chakra Hobbies

Self-love and lots of Self-Care. Remember you can only love others if you love yourself  first, so do what is nurturing for you. Take up hobbies that you intuitively know are good for you.
 

A Balanced Heart Chakra

When your Heart Chakra is balanced, you will be kind, caring, understanding, joyous and outgoing, feel completely at ease with yourself and the people in your life. You will have more fulfilling relationships with those you love. You will understand others and accept them for who they are; you will not be judgmental of their actions.  You will be more open to understand the needs of others through love, compassion, and empathy. You will find it easier to forgive others. Spending time alone is something you do not mind and you are not rushing into one relationship after another.

You will have feelings of unconditional love, forgiveness, centered and peacefulness, an openness to receive and give, compassion, trust, loving and meaningful relationships.

An Imbalanced Heart Chakra

When our Heart Chakra is in balance it’s truly a beautiful thing. However, most of us – at some point or another – will meet major obstacles in this area. Everyday life circumstances can cause problems for your heart center – from break-ups or health issues and to poor self-esteem.

If you have an imbalanced heart chakra you may experience the following symptoms that have manifested in your body: heart palpitations, chest pain, poor circulation, high/low blood pressure, and in more serious cases, heart attack. The physical symptoms of an imbalanced heart chakra are; depression, anxiety, sadness, blood pressure, heart problems, circulation problems, asthma and breast cancer.

How to Balance your Heart Chakra

  • The heart chakra’s element is air so spending lots of time outdoors in nature feeling the breeze on your skin and allowing your heart to feel it, can be very healing for the heart. Going for walks around trees and grass as well as laying in the grass and allowing the heart to feel it, can also be very healing. Nothing feels better than lying out on grass on a warm or cool day!
  • Yoga – which is one of my favorite things to do. This will really help you maintain a balanced heart chakra. If your heart chakra is blocked, it’s likely that your throat chakra is blocked too. The camel pose works well for both chakras to balance them up.  See step by step instructions for this pose below.
  • Forgiveness – yes this is a huge one for our hearts. The best way to maintain a balanced heart chakra is to forgive yourself and others. If you find yourself constantly rewinding past events in your mind that trouble you, you will only continue to feel frustrated, angry, lonely or betrayed. Counseling, or even talking to a good friend or family, might help here.
  • Exercise keeps our heart healthy. Experiment and see what best suits you at this stage in your life.
  • Reiki is one of the most effective ways of healing and balancing the heart chakra.
  • Meditate chanting the sound vibration YAM.
  • Crystals such as emerald, kunzite, green jade, rose quartz and pink tourmaline can be used to help clear the heart chakra. I love nothing more than to lie on my bed meditating with some rose quartz on my heart chakra.
  • Try your best to be non-judgmental to others. When you find yourself judging others, breathe into your heart on an inhale and on an exhale let the judgement go.
  • Start by finding compassion and kindness for yourself daily, which then makes it possible to find it for others.
  • Eat lots of greens (my favorite).
  • Be thankful for what you already have. Live your life in the most generous and open way possible.
  • This one can be hard but try to see past peoples behaviors and try see the real person behind it all.
  • Journal asking yourself the following questions –  From whom do you seek acceptance and approval?  What conditions do you put on yourself? What would life feel like if you stopped caring about what anyone thought?  What if YOU approved of yourself?
  • Spend time out alone – make a date with yourself and enjoy your own loving company.
  • Add more of the color green into your life through eating green food, wearing more green clothes and adding green plants to your home.
  • Do some random acts of kindness and spread the heart love energy.
  • Burn some lavender, rose, sandalwood, ylang ylang, jasmine or bergamot essential oils.

 

Try this pose “Camel Pose  – Ustrasana” to balance your heart chakra.

 

Step-By-Step-Instructions

  1. Start by kneeling on the floor. Place your knees hip width apart and set your hips over the knees.
  2. Bring your thighs upright and turn your feet under (or place them flat if you know this pose).
  3. Place your hands firmly on the back of your pelvis or top of your buttocks.
  4. As you breathe, slowly begin to reach up and out through the top of your head, gradually moving back into an arc. Roll your shoulders back by pressing your shoulder blades back and against your back ribs. Your chest will expand and the heart region will lift. For the moment keep  your head resting on your chest.
  5. Each time you breathe in, expand the chest, opening your heart and lungs.
  6. Press down into your knees and thighs to anchor your legs.
  7. If you find this stage comfortable, complete the pose by bringing your hands all the way down onto the soles of your feet.
  8. If you are able to establish an almost horizontal position with your chest, you are now ready to allow the head to extend back. Don’t be in a hurry to do this until you’ve established enough opening in your thoracic spine top act as a foundation for your neck.
  9. Stay for several breaths, or for as long as it feels comfortable.
  10. To exit, exhale and contract your abdominal muscles. Slowly bring your hands onto the back of your pelvis. As you inhale, contract your abdominal muscles further to pull the bottom ribs forward causing the trunk to flex forward. Continue to lift your chest over the knees. If your head is back, wait for your chest to pass over your knees, and only then let the head flow forward with gravity (this will avoid strain to the neck).
  11. Move slowly into Child’s Pose and rest for a few breaths.

  • Lower back (especially herniation) and neck injury
  • Injury or stiffness of the knees
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Pregnancy
  • Migraine
  • Insomnia
