What is the Sacral chakra?

Have you ever suffered from a block and/or a lack of confidence in your feelings, or perhaps in your own sensuality? This may be a sign to explore your sacral chakra. I’ll admit this is a chakra I’ve been very much blocked in for a long time (way too long!) and I’m working really hard at the moment (and have been for a while) in bringing it back to a healthy balance.

Our second chakra dwells in our reproductive area. Its the chakra of creativity,  pure attention,  its about feelings, sexuality and pure knowledge. This is the chakra that helps us tap into our inner source of inspiration, enabling us to witness all the beauty around us.

The sacral chakra is very much your centre of creativity. You will need passion to bring about this creative energy. Think about everything you create; whether it’s a poem, a painting, a drawing, a website, a cake, a recipe, a song etc. – this all originates from the energy of your second chakra. This is the same place where your fertility originates. After all, conceiving a child is a creative process too!

I love this explanation from ChakraDance

[box type=”info”]The main function of this chakra is emotional flow. The Sanskrit name for the sacral chakra Svadhisthana means sweetness. The essence of this chakra is revealed in the sweet exchange of intimacy and connectedness.  Physiologically, the sacral chakra governs our sexual development and maturity, and the health of the reproductive and urinary systems.  As well as sexual pleasure, the sweetness of the sacral can be experienced through nurturing oneself with the simple pleasures of rest, good food, and tactile pleasures like dancing and massage.[/box]

A Balanced Sacral Chakra
When in balance you will find it easy to relate to people, your feelings will flow freely, and you will easily express them without being over-emotional. You will be open to intimacy and you will have no problems dealing with your sexuality.

An Imbalanced Sacral Chakra

When we have an imbalanced sacral chakra, we may experience a block in our creativity and a sense of emptiness. You will experience very low self-worth and self-esteem. You will be troubled with feelings of guilt and you may find it very hard to forgive yourself for past mistakes. You will be constantly judging your worth compared to others. Physical symptoms may include infertility problems, chronic fatigue or loss of joyful energy, inability to orgasm or decreased libido, horrible PMS, painful cramps or miserable perimenopausal symptoms, frequent urinary tract infections, sexual appetite imbalances (hyper or hypo sexual), tightness and soreness around the hips, bladder problems and chronic lower back pain.

How to Balance your Sacral Chakra

  • Try using tiger’s eye crystal (you could use this during meditation, carry in your wallet or sleep with it under your pillow or keep it close by on your bedside table which I like to do).
  • Mantra is fantastic, it’s one of my favorite things to do. Mantra repetition will assist in clearing the mind bringing a sense of balance to the emotions. A lovely mantra to use is  Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo which translates to “I bow to the creative energy of the Infinite: I bow to the Divine Channel of Wisdom”. This mantra is also considered a mantra of protection.  When you repeat this mantra, try to focus your awareness at the area just below your navel (location of your sacral chakra) while you repeat silently or aloud Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.
  • Journaling seriously helps – just get it all out on paper. Get all those frustrations, negative emotions and all the ugly stuff out of your head and on to paper. If you’re concerned somebody will find it, burn it afterwards!
  • Love letters of gratitude and appreciation can bring healing and balance to your emotional body.
  • Kundalini yoga (a kriya focusing on this chakra) – yes my favorite thing to do right now and gosh is it powerful! That’s the very reason I’m all signed up for teacher training November, this yoga practice is transformative on every level. My teacher Patty Kikos runs a wonderful kundalini chakra course at Sukha Mukha Yoga in Bronte, I highly recommend taking this course if your interested in learning more about the chakras. Also there’s the divine space of KMYOGA which I’ve spoken about before over here. Check it out, you will not be disappointed!
  • Reiki works a treat.
  • Yoga – especially those juicy hip opening ones such as the pose I provide below.
  • Meditate chanting the sound vibration VAM.
  • Burn incense of cedarwood  to cleanse guilt.

Try this pose “Pigeon Pose – Eka Pada Rajakapotasana” to balance your sacral chakra.

  1. Start by coming into Downward Facing dog which I’ve explained before over here.
  2. Inhale and lift your right leg to the sky behind you, keeping the hips nice and square.
  3. On an exhale, bend your right leg and bring it forward to the top of your mat placing the knee beside the base of your right thumb.
  4. Open the foot towards the left hip and slide the left leg as far back as possible. Now look back and ensure your foot and leg are pointing straight back.
  5. Be mindful to keep the hips square. A common misalignment is allowing the right buttock to collapse to the ground out to the right, which will tend to bring the hips out of alignment.
  6. Energetically, gently bring the right hip back as the left hip moves forward to create a grounded feeling into the Earth.
  7. Fold forward, extending the arms out in front of you taking the forehead to rest on the ground (create fists if the forehead is not yet reaching the ground and stack one fist on top of the other). Hold for ten breaths.
  8. As you will see in the above photo, I’ve taken it to the next stage.  Only take it to this stage if you are able to painlessly and evenly stay in this posture while removing your right hand from the earth, you may reach your right arm behind you with the palm up.  Draw your lower belly in to stabilize your spine, inner thighs moving towards each other.  Then bend your right knee and take hold of the flexed foot with your hand. Staying for 3-5 breaths or for as long as it feels comfortable and release the back leg.
  9. You can exit, by gently and slowly sliding your right knee back to your left coming to all fours and lift back into downward facing dog. Walk your dog out especially on the right side allowing the right hip to release and settle.
  10. Repeat on the other side.

  • Knee injury or ligament injury.
  • Sacroiliac joint injury – due to the opposing action of the legs in this pose which may increase strain across the joint.
  • History of shoulder dislocation – do not progress to holding the top of the foot behind the back (which is the Advanced stage in the photo above) and use caution reaching behind you for the foot.

I hope that you’ve found this post useful on the sacral chakra and I hope that it has given you some clarity on how to balance this very important energy center.

Remember if this chakra is nicely balanced your feelings will flow freely, and you will easily express them without being over-emotional, you will love life, feel generally optimistic and happy and take healthy satisfaction in sensual experiences.

Be kind, be courageous, be yourself.
