Burnout is not just physical.
Burnout is also mental, emotional and spiritual.
Overwhelmed, extremely weary, easily frustrated, hopeless… These are all words used to describe the path to burnout.
Burnout is when your external demands are greater than your internal capacity to deliver and you have spent all your inner reserves and you feel spent. It’s a very dangerous place to reside in as it can cause havoc on your physical and mental health.
Let’s take a look at spiritual burn-out today.
This is basically when you take on too much spiritual work not allowing your spirit to rest, process, integrate and grow.
You become obsessed with self-help. You hop around from one workshop to the other never really committing to one practice or discipline.
You become obsessed with gathering and consuming lots of information via self-help books, “google”, youtube, you name it, etc.
You pack your schedule (so you have no space to be and breathe) full of workshops, webinars, podcasts, audiobooks and spending pretty much all of your social life talking about spiritual ideas or experiences.
Burnout signals include:
- Withdrawal from your life, relationships, social circles, community, etc
- Feeling depressed
- Feeling hopeless
- Spiritual disconnection (“The Universe/God has abandoned me”)
- Spiritual strain (“The Universe/God is so far from me.”)
- Spiritual doubt (“I can’t believe in the Universe/God if this terrible thing could happen to me.)
Balance is key here and working with an experienced teacher, coach and mentor are also key in supporting your evolution and growth.
Burnout recovery takes time. It will not happen overnight and it requires work and real support. Baby steps in the right direction lead to strides.
